Great Smart Plugs
After using smart plugs from another popular manufacturer for several years, I decided to try the new Meross smart plugs with Matter to see how they compare. Overall, Iâm very impressed!Setting up these smart plugs is a little different than the plugs Iâve used in the past. The included paper instructions said to click the plus sign in the app and then choose the option to scan the QR code on the plug. However, I didn’t initially get an option to scan a code. Instead, I chose the option to add a smart plug, selected the correct model, and was prompted to watch a short video explaining how to add the device to Apple Home and the Meross app. The video prompted me to open the camera and scan the QR code on the plug, and a moment later, it was added to both apps. Next, it asked if I wanted to add it to Amazon Alexa or Google Home, which was also a simple process.Afterward, I tested controlling the plug through Home, Alexa, and the Meross app, and all worked perfectly. It also responds a bit faster than my other plugs. At this point, I thought it was like any other smart plug. Then I looked in the Meross app and saw a bunch of neat features.First, it can monitor energy usage. I plugged in my laptop charger and was able to see the real-time power consumption. It also logs this info to see power usage over a day, week, month, or year. You can also enter the rate you pay for electricity and track how much it costs to power whatever is plugged in. Iâm going to use these on my indoor Christmas lights this winter to see how much thatâs costing me.Another nice feature is the overheat alert. The plug should never overheat, but if there is a problem or if you overload the plug and it starts to get too hot, the app can alert you. You can also set it to automatically shut off if it gets too hot. There is also a âstandby killerâ feature that can be enabled to prevent devices in standby from using electricity.Overall, Iâm impressed with this smart plug. It was easy to set up and has a great set of features. Iâd definitely recommend it if youâre looking to pick up some smart plugs.

Direct SmartThings control at a fraction of the price
I have a few Meross devices, more than I realize until I open the app (at least 9 now). These devices have been among the most reliable/consistent and I’m happy to see firmware updates for many year old devices still rolling out.I ordered these plugs as I thought that direct matter support would give me local control (through SmartThings which is my primary hub) without the price tag of more zigbee/z-wave smart outlets. Surprisingly, these work great. I did fumble a little when setting them up and found it’s easiest to connect them to SmartThings using the QR code first, then open the Meross app and it magically discovers the device on your network. I made the mistake of doing it the other way around (adding the outlet to the Meross app first) then wondering why I was struggling with SmartThing until I realized I was trying to use two different Wi-Fi networks (I try to keep smart devices on one and personal devices on the other). My mistake. Adding additional devices wasn’t an issue.I love that I can actually fit two of these smart outlets on a decora outlet, there’s enough room! I can’t say that for most smart outlets I’ve used.SmartThings has only basic controls (as expected) but switching is instantaneous. The Meross app uncovers a ton of usability – the first outlet I tried out I plugged my espresso machine into since I forget to turn it off at times. Not only can I monitor power consumption, but I use the “Standby killer” feature to monitor for power draw longer than 35min (meaning I forgot to turn the machine off after using it) and the outlet will cut power on its own. Super convenient.

Work perfectly.
The initial setup is different than other smartplugs I have. These are matter plugs. I didn’t read the user manual at first. When first setting up it wants you to set up using matter which is fine, but I didn’t realize you have to have a matter hub to begin with which confused me at first. I have other meross devices so using the app made setup very easy. They automatically get added to Alexa and Google home after setting up. After reading the user manual, that explains everything very well. They’re easy to read and easy to understand. The energy consumption feature is an added bonus for these plugs. I use them to turn the lights on and off on my aquariums and using the routines feature makes them very easy to control. They’re very well made for the price point compared to my other meross plugs I prefer these. Not so big that they block the other outlets on my power strips. I would definitely recommend these to other people.

There were no instructions included on connecting to Apple Home! I downloaded their app first and then deleted it as it was not necessary. Once this was realized, connection to Apple Home went seamlessly.
