A new, larger format edition of the Royal School of Needlework’s essential guide to blackwork.
The Royal School of Needlework teaches hand embroidery to the highest standard, developing techniques in new and innovative ways. This series of Essential Stitch Guides provides expert tuition on a variety of techniques. In this guide to blackwork, Graduate Apprentice and tutor, Becky Hogg, shows how to develop many different patterns from the basic blackwork stitches, using detailed instructions and beautiful examples of traditional and contemporary embroideries. There is a fascinating look at the history of blackwork, a guide to the materials needed, and then a detailed look at the stitches used. These are then developed into a huge variety of beautiful patterns, and finally there is a guide to varying the look of these patterns through the use of different shading techniques. There are inspiring embroideries throughout the book, both historical pieces and contemporary works by the author and other RSN apprentices.
From the Publisher
“What I love most about blackwork is the intricate nature of the patterns, which have a graphic quality quite unique in embroidery. I am also drawn to the monochrome nature of this technique, which gives it such a striking and defined appearance.”

Blackwork was popularised in England during the reign of Henry VIII.
Learn all of the blackwork stitches that you will need…
Back stitch and double running stitch
Back stitch is key for all the diaper patterns in blackwork and is a simple stitch to master.
Double running stitch has the same appearance as back stitch, the only difference is that, because of the order in which you work, it is much neater on the reverse.
Chain stitch is effective in blackwork to achieve thicker outlines around a diaper pattern. It is made up of a series of loops which link together.
Sketched satin stitch can be used in blackwork to create a delicate, broken border on a design.
Stem stitch is the best stitch for edging a design with a fine, smooth and delicate outline
… and plenty of striking patterns to try your hand at…

This is made up of small squares and octagons with a star inside. It is a mid-scale pattern and is suitable for more rounded, organic shapes.
Lace
This is a complex decorative pattern made up of an open cross shape and a lozenge. It is a larger scale of pattern and is suitable for rounded shapes and for depicting the natural world.
Grecian curls
This pattern is made up of adjoining groups of ‘G’ shapes. It is a very open, larger scale pattern and is suitable for creating a graphic effect.

Excellent Guide With One Caveat
This is a thorough, well-written guide to blackwork embroidery. It is useful for embroiderers at the intermediate or advanced level who want to learn this beautiful form of stitching. The patterns and photographs enhance the instruction. More than 30 stitches are shown. My only complaint is that stitching order for the patterns is not given, not even hints!! You have to figure out the sequence of stitches for every pattern on your own. This is not too hard for experienced stitchers, especially with the simpler patterns, but would be prohibitively difficult for beginners and even some intermediate level embroiderers.
