The essential guide to living with orthostatic intolerance.

Orthostatic intolerance (OI) describes a group of circulatory disorders whose symptoms are characterized by a dramatic drop in blood flow to the brain when people sit down or stand up. It is often associated with other acute issues, such as substantial drops in blood pressure, tachycardia, dizziness, and fainting, or long-term problems, such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and “long COVID.” Living Well with Orthostatic Intolerance is an indispensable guide for those diagnosed with the disorder, their families, and physicians.

Written by Peter C. Rowe, MD, a pediatrician, researcher, and professor who directs the Chronic Fatigue Clinic at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, this guide explains:
• The symptoms, causes, and different forms of OI
• What a diagnosis of OI entails
• How to manage OI symptoms using medications, physical therapy, and other treatments
• How diet affects OI

Guided by decades of research on managing and treating OI patients, Dr. Rowe provides illustrative case studies to help explain the disease and includes additional resources for further information.

    Excellent; very informative!
My previously healthy adult son has MEcfs and amongst other issues now suffers from POTS (Postural Orthostatic Intolerance Syndrome). This book, along with Dr. Rowe’s recent videos, have provided an extremely helpful understanding of what causes the awful symptoms involved, including deep fatigue, very fast heart rate, dizziness and brain fog. This condition makes it very challenging to do simple taskswhen standing up, such as getting food or even taking a shower. The book provides great ideas to help reduce or mitigate these symptoms.Dr. Rowe also provides a very informative discussion of different prescription medicines that can (and do) make a considerable difference in the misery suffered from POTS. Thank you Dr. Rowe for explaining this illness in lay terms so that patients and caregivers alike feel more informed and can make an important difference in the lives of people suffering from POTS. More importantly my son thanks you also.If you or someone you know suffers from Orthostatic Intolerance or POTS, I can highly recommend this book. (I do not know Dr. Rowe at all but am very grateful to have this book).

Indispensable reference for patients with orthostatic intolerance/POTS/ME/CFS
Dr. Rowe is a gem of a doctor and an incredible resource of knowledge on orthostatic intolerance (OI). This book is a well written reference for patients wanting to learn more about their condition, and includes lots of actionable lifestyle modifications as well as summaries of common medications and a chapter of full case studies. I think quite a few doctor’s I’ve seen would benefit from skimming it too. I highly recommend it to anyone who is (or thinks they might be) struggling with orthostatic intolerance!

Highly over-rated for lay person, suitable for MD’s only
Difficult to read treatise, a clinical reference book for MD’s, not suitable for the layperson. Isn’t “how to live well” with anything, only drug, testing details for MD’s. Book highly over-rated.

    I wish it were longer
It’s only 160 pages and most of that is technical stuff. I don’t think it’s worth $20 for that reason. But there are some good tips for living with OI. However, I wish that section were longer.
