Great way to start thinking about HOP in a real way
Ten Ideas isn’t really a book about Human Performance so much as a book about how to think about Human Performance, which I appreciate, and I think is lacking. There’s a lot literature about what it is and what it means, but not enough about how to shift your mindset and think critically about safety and create a meaningful change. All too often in safety, people want step by step guides for how to implement a program, and I think that’s one of the reasons that people have such trouble with HOP, because it’s not a program or procedure. It’s a mindset change that might have a few implementable practices, such a learning teams, but for the most part it’s more of a concept to apply. This is where Ten Things to Make Safety Suck Less works very well.I appreciate that the book is structured in a way that makes these concepts easy to digest, build on one another, but then also see how they can apply either broadly or in specific ways. One of the things I like about talking to people about HOP is that I can dial into the little thing that will work for them and get them to understand and relate to that before dropping something more challenging on them. For example, someone might be good with the idea of layers of defense, or failing safety long before they are good with the idea that everyone makes mistakes and blame fixes nothing. Ten Things draws out these questions to ask people and points to make in a really natural way without feeling like you’re beating someone over the head with HOP, and in a way that I think would be disarming for people whose first reaction to HOP is to say “that’s great but how do you implement it in the real world.”I think the book fits into a good space for someone who has moved past some of the foundational literature and is asking themselves, “ok, so now what am I going to do with this in the real world to get some traction and make a difference?” and I’m glad it doesn’t follow that traditional path of “10 steps to human performance.”

A++!!! Straight forward and realistic approaches to OSH and HOP Leadership
Was feeling burned out in EHS/OSH. Got this book as I was heading into a new organization and role. Have started applying the ideas from the book in my approaches and the organization is responding exceptionally well to them. Has allowed me to integrate faster than expected and calibrate leadership’s mindset to be even more receptive to a positive safety culture. A++ book for the OSH professional!!!!

Very good read for any profession!!!
Mr. Goodman does a great job at making this book applicable to any job position you are in! You don’t need to be in Safety to read this book. You should read it if you aspire to be in any leadership position over your career. I am halfway through the book and it has already changed a lot of my views (for the better) when it comes to the management to employee relationship. Highly recommend for anyone!! It is definitely worth every penny you spend!!

You know there is a lot not so great about being a H&S practicioner.
A great book to start understanding human and organizational performance and the impact on the role of the H&S practicioner. Sam Goodman is talking from real world experience. He is able to tell the story that is so recognisable for any H&S practicioner.Taking Conklin and Dekker and relating it to real world practice of the every day H&S practicioner.

Easily accessible and very practically based, with real world examples, chapter summaries, and actions you can implement right now. Some great summaries on Human and Organisational Performance, with Sam sharing what he has seen work and not work in multiple industries. Highly recommend.
