Top Tier Smartphone for a Budget Price
I just “upgraded” from an LG Nexus 4 and although the Nexus 4 technically has better specs, this is flat out a better phone in nearly every way. I also purchased and returned a Moto X about a month ago and similarly, while the G is not technically as good as the X, it is a better phone in my opinion. The low price is obviously the biggest draw here, but the Moto G looks, feels, and works great! It’s miles ahead of any budget phone and better than any mid ranger and may even approach some of the halo phones on the market right now.The build quality is very high. It feels solid in hand and does not flex or bend at all. All the seams are very tight and it looks great. It’s not on par with the metal finish of the HTC One or the iPhone 5s, but IMHO it’s better than the Samsung Galaxy models of late and most other plastic phones. The screen may be the best in the business right now. It’s obviously a matter of opinion, but working in IT I get to setup and support many different models of smartphones. I find most IPS screens (LG, HTC) to display colors quite accurately, but look rather washed out on whites and blacks that just end up looking rather gray. I find most AMOLED screens (Samsung, Moto X) to display whites and blacks very well, but they tend to make colors look overly vivid and almost cartoonish. I don’t know how Motorola did it, but the IPS screen on the Moto G seems to strike a near perfect balance with white whites, black blacks, and accurate colors. It looks really good!Software wise, it comes with the very latest version of Android available – 4.4.3. Being carrier unlocked, it doesn’t come with any bloatware – only Google and Motorola apps, which all seem to be quite useful. It doesn’t come with the latest Google Now launcher (only available on Nexus phones), but it was very easy to sideload. The G performs quite fast with almost no lag that I can detect – loading apps and switching between them very quickly. For connectivity, the LTE radio is definitely worth it! My Nexus 4 only offered HSPA and this phone is noticeably faster on the network (T-Mobile, in my case). I’ve also found wi-fi to be considerably faster as well. Not sure why, but at both my work and home the G is downloading apps and surfing the web and so on much faster than my Nexus 4 ever did – an unexpected benefit. The optional colored back shells and grip shells are pretty neat and unique to the G. I bought a blue one and it’s pretty fun to be able to change the look of your phone on a whim. I’ve even had a couple people comment and ask me what kind of phone it is. Never had that with any of the all black phones I’ve had in the past.Battery life is very good. Not great, but very good. For light to moderate use it will definitely last a whole day, but I did manage to run it all the way down before dinner one day with heavy use.As far as drawbacks, I’m not finding many. Probably the biggest is that it does not come with an AC charger – only a USB cable. I have a few extras around, so it wasn’t a big deal but some folks might be surprised. Other reviewers have mentioned the camera not being very good, but the camera on my Nexus 4 wasn’t very good either. I’ve taken several photos indoors and out with the G and they seem fine to me for a smartphone. Certainly not DSLR quality, but that’s why you have a DSLR. 🙂 And you obviously don’t get the voice commands or the active notifications found on the Moto X, which are admittedly quite useful.Overall, I highly recommend this phone! At any price, it would be a really great phone and at this price it’s a no-brainer!

Moto G 4G – “Inexpensive” does not equal “cheap”; great value Android phone hampered only by RAM.
I have used the Moto G 4G model for 4 months after switching from an HTC One M7 (2013). The last three smartphones I used had some issues that have left me unable to fully enjoy using them. Whether it was aging and slowing hardware (iPhone 3G), lack of software updates and developer support (One X+), or an underwhelming battery life (One M7), I was never entirely comfortable with any one smartphone. 4 months into my time with the Moto G 4G, I can confidently say that the streak is broken. It may not have the fastest CPU or GPU, but it’s fast enough for what I need and can hang in there during the occasional gaming session; it has been among the first to receive software updates among manufacturers with a growing developer community on XDA; it has an outstanding battery life that puts most Android phones to shame, giving me a consistent 2 days of use with 2-3 hours screen time. And best of all, the 4.5″ 720p screen never reminds you of this phone’s budget origins. The Moto G 4G does everything I need it to, and then some. Moving down from a 2013 flagship, I have been very comfortable with this 4.5″ contender that punches well above its weight class. The only real pain points I constantly feel are the 1 GB RAM and the terrible camera. Although the phone runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat smoothly, it often runs into memory management problems, aggressively closing apps and refreshing browser tabs. Take this into consideration when moving from something like a Galaxy S4 or Nexus 4. And if mobile photography is important to you, look elsewhere, because the camera module on the Moto G will disappoint you with its lack of detail and aggressive noise reduction. The only positives are the auto-focus and LED flash. For reference, the 2 MP camera on my old iPhone 3G can consistently snap better shots than the 5 MP module on the Moto G.Budget phones are all about compromise. What are you willing to give up in order to get the best value for the price? In my opinion, the Motorola Moto G makes the *right* compromises to become one of the best value Android phones in the past year. When considering the Moto G, whether it be the original 2013, 4G LTE, or 2014 models, it is important to think about what you *want* in a phone, and what you *need* in a phone. The Moto G is not a high-end device. But in practice, it more than makes up for it with a great user experience that will satisfy the average user. The question you have to ask yourself is whether those flagship devices are worth 3-4 times more or 3-4 times better than what Motorola provides at $179.99-$219.99 (now $199.99 for the 4G model). The answer for me was no. The Moto G gives you an inexpensive (but not *cheap*), unlocked, off-contract device with excellent performance at a fraction of the cost. The Moto G is arguably one of the best, if not the best, values you can get in a smartphone today.Pros:-Inexpensive cost for high-performance off-contract phone-The 4G model has a pentaband 3G radio; no need to choose between “GSM” and “Global” models-4.5″ 720p screen is one of the best in this price range (smaller size may be preferable for some users, such as myself)-microSD card slot for external storage-Fast software updates (so far); currently running Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Android 5.0 Lollipop on the horizon-Well-optimized and smooth user experience thanks to minimal software skin-Excellent battery life that, depending on your setup, could get you 24+ hours of use-FM radio-Unlockable bootloader (VOIDS WARRANTY, UNLOCK AT YOUR OWN RISK)Cons:-Only 1 GB of RAM and aggressive memory management make multitasking painful; depending on your usage, you may see constant background app closures and refreshing-Awful 5 MP camera. If smartphone optics are high on your priority list, look elsewhere and be prepared to spend more-Lack of internal storage for the 4G model; many apps do not support moving to the SD card, so only ~5.52 GB on the 8 GB model are available to install apps-Non-removable battery. This seems to be a compromise for the slight water-resistance. However, it does appear that you can use a Torx screwdriver to get to the battery if needed-Low-end CPU and GPU could make gaming a challenge for some demanding apps

came with a bunch of crap AT&T apps :s meaning you’d have to root your phone to free up the minute storage space. did become exponentially slow after a few years. I never had to worry about getting this lower tier phone stolen on my travels 🙂

Good graphics, fast, not too big so it’s easy & comfortable to hold. Well built for the economical price paid.Camera not the best. Universal model is loaded with AT & T apps that cannot be removed without rooting. Volume is adequate. Did not buy to play games or for taking pictures, so the camera is exactly what I need it for. I am happy with the purchase & would recommend it for anyone that doesn’t want a camera that takes flagship pictures.
