The Airway Centric® Model prevents Airway-Centered Disorders, Sleep-Disordered Breathing to maintain mental and physical health. Learn how to recognize and correct Airway-Centered Disorders, Sleep-Disordered Breathing.Gasp is about our airway, breathing and sleep. Problems can start at birth. Many premature babies are mouth breathers. A poorly structured and functioning airway leads to mouth breathing, snoring and sleep apnea; it can interfere with restorative sleep and ultimately damage the part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex, which controls executive function skills, attentiveness, anxiety and depression. Learn how to restore an ideal airway with early intervention, and where to go for help. Learn how once the airway is established with breastfeeding, allergy treatment, and other methods, neurocognitive and neurobehavioral problems are greatly improved—often without any medication. Anxiety and depression are alleviated, and the behavior and performance of children are remarkably transformed.Today there is a health movement toward “Wellness.” Wellness is about diet and nutrition, exercise, and mental attitude. The new paradigm is called “Functional Medicine.” It addresses the causes of chronic disease with an individualized approach and emphasizes early intervention. It restores the balance amongst functional systems and the networks that connect them. The missing link is airway, breathing, and sleep. If we don’t breathe well when we sleep, 1/3 of our life is affected. Gasp describes the impact of a narrowed airway from cradle to grave. Every day, we encounter fatigued patients with chronic headaches and neck pain. They have difficulty concentrating; they suffer with GI problems from acid reflux to irritable bowel syndrome. They range from thin women to men who have put on a few pounds. And you do not have to be obese to have an airway problem. Many of our younger patients with ADHD and airway issues have little body fat.Time after time we see that once the airway is opened during the day and maintained during sleep, the transformation is quick and dramatic.Breathing is life.

Dentist Recommended This Book
My dentist recommended this book to me at a annual checkup. It is a REALLY great read and informative. Especially, if you have family history or jaw and airway problems. It has many eye opening chapters, how breathing and jaw position can cause other issues.

Dr. Michael Gelb nails it on the head every sleep medicine physician should read this book
This is a wonderful book that helps dispel many of the myths your sleep apnea physician may currently believe. Your doctor probably thinks you’re fat so you got sleep apnea instead of considering the sleep apnea causes decreased metabolism rate and a slew of other problems that can cause you to gain weight. Your sleep medicine doctor probably has no clue that you have sleep apnea if you don’t snore. Likewise your sleep apnea doctor is probably clueless about the multitude of possible causes of sleep apnea. Your sleep apnea doctor may understand that oral appliances can cause temporomandibular pain but I doubt your sleep apnea doctor fully understands that temporomandibular dysfunction even without an oral appliance can actually cause sleep apnea. There’s a line in this book that I love after trying multiple medical interventions one of the subjects in this book discovered that the real drug they needed was oxygen .

Great read for dental and sleep issues. There is hope!
I needed this book when I refused to do a sleep study test. I will not be needing a CPAP machine after learning so much about my sleep patterns, dental issues, and the research behind my problems. This insightful book, fully backed by research (similar to Dr. Weston Price) has me hopeful and has me working on nasal breathing, getting my partial tongue tie fixed and perhaps even changing dentists. Air is EVERYTHING. Breathing is LIFE.

Great overview on a timely subject
This is probably the best source for general information regarding a terrible epidemic. We need more voices from the dental and medical community to speak out. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I thought the book was too commercialized and promotional. Regardless, it was a great read and I found it highly informative and well documented.

EXCELLENT RESOURCE
I am reading this for a THIRD time and just ordered another copy to share with patients. I am a speech-language pathologist who is trained in myofunctional therapy–this is a great book for parents, professionals and everyone in between. Well-organized and short enough length make it a top recommendation!

I am glued to this book
I can’t even describe how powerful of a learning tool this book is and ties everything airway disease related. From tongue ties , allergies and headgear this book has affirmed many suspect issues. I am halfway through and will post an update. I wish they had included a list or airway centric therapists as they are hard to find in this school of thought.

Love this book. I never really thought too much about the side effects of being a mouth breather, but if you or your children seem to have any difficulty sleeping, then this book might really Enlighten you. The author clearly presents the information and although it’s very scientific it is written in a way that is super easy to understand

This is a poor cobbling together of existing data – many of which have been disproved or are no longer valid. There was nothing new and certainly nothing to shed any light on what is a worldwide pandemic. It completely misses the fact that the majority of people with ‘sleep disorders’ do not wake up because they can’t SLEEP. They wake up because they can’t BREATHE. THEY FAIL TO CONNECT THE FACT THAT THE TWO GOLD STANDARDS IN MANAGING SLEEP DISORDERS ARE BREATHING DEVICES.In the field of Health you are either part of the solution – and if not – you remain part of the problem. This book does absolutely nothing to address the origins of the basic problem and simply regurgitates the dogmas of 50 years ago.

Lots of great information on causes, but was hoping for some ideas to try at home. They focus on selling their own device in this book.
