This is Season 3 in the US and Series 6 in England – GREAT Viewing!
There are two points to keep in mind. First, the Region 1 episodes and DVD titled “Season 3” were actually season/series 6 in England. Second, and possibly also confusing, in England the show is called “The Great British Bake Off” or GBBO. They couldn’t use that name for sales in America, though, because Pillsbury has the trademark on “bake off”.That said the Great British Baking Show is a lot of fun to watch. It doesn’t matter if you watch the seasons out of order, because the format is the same. For ten weekends in a row, contestants meet in a big tent. On Saturday, they have the Signature Challenge and the Technical Challenge. On Sunday is the Showstopper Challenge and announcements of this week’s Star Baker as well as the person who is eliminated and will not be returning next week.Signature Challenge: The contestants are given the parameters before hand, such as “a madeira cake to make in 2 hours” (Week One). They can bake anything at all that falls within those parameters, so there’s a lot of delicious variety. They are able to practice their recipes at home as much as they want. And each baker brings their own ingredients to the bake off tent.Technical Challenge: Every contestant gets the same recipe and it is a surprise what that recipe will be right up until they gather for the technical challenge. Every contestant also gets the same ingredients, so there is no variation. The real horror, if you ask me, of this challenge, is that the recipe given them is deliberately sparse in its details. That’s because it is supposed to test their knowledge of baking. For example, in Week Two, the two judges are discussing the technical challenge away from the tent. Mary asks Paul, who created the recipe for that week, “Have you suggested that they create steam in the oven?” Paul answers, “No. I expect them to know how to get a great crust on bread.”Showstopper Challenge: Again, the contestants were given the parameters before hand and they can practice at home. They can create anything they want within the project description and the given time limit. For example, for Week Two, the parameters given are “a 3-D bread sculpture, using three types of dough, one filled, to be completed in 5 hours.” As you’d expect, the creativity ran amok, usually successfully. How about a bicycle made of bread, or, as the contestant called it, “a bread-cycle.”This season of “The Great British Baking Show” originally aired in England in 2015. The ten episodes total about 10 hours of fascinating viewing. Unlike American contestant shows, you can tell each amateur baker wants to win, but there is no nastiness or back-biting whatsoever. The DVD has English subtitles available. There are no bonus features on the DVDs.Favorite moments from Season 3:….New ingredients! I had never heard of physalis berries or marula fruit. How about the cheesecake flavor combination of tarragon & apple?….As each contestant puts his/her creation in the oven, there’s a tendency to sit on the floor and anxiously watch through the oven window. Week Four, one contestant grins and says, “I feel like … David Attenborough. ‘If we just sit very quietly here, we’ll soon see the brulees coming out.’ “….Week Six Technical Challenge. Away from the busy contestants, the judges are discussing the recipe, Cyprian Flaounas with two flavors of mastika and mehlebi. Mary asks about the recipe given the bakers, “Have you explained to them what to do with these?” Paul admits, “No.”Mary smiles, “I think that’s totally unfair. It is the toughest challenge yet.”Paul grins, “Great, isn’t it?!”A watchable and enjoyable program.Happy Reader

GBBS Has All the Right Ingredients – Season 3 is Favorite!
Instantly hooked on this series! We don’t have network or cable “TV” ; I knew nothing about this show until viewing episodes this winter while visiting family. Since then I’ve bought all the seasons available in the U.S. on DVD!As a long time foodie & cook, I initially thought the FOOD would be the primary reason to watch it. I’m not a fan of reality TV so somewhat surprised by how engaged I became with the individuals on the show, from presenters to judges and particularly the contestants, as they progress through the weeks of competition. Although the competition is spirited, I find the old-fashioned friendly atmosphere between the bakers REFRESHING (sometimes they even lend a hand to one another.) Although I don’t always agree with who should be “Star Baker” or who is next in line to be cut as competition progresses overall I find Mary & Paul’s judging to be correct and fair. AND who doesn’t love Mel and Sue (and Sue’s great delivery of food puns?) Favorite seasons to watch are the U.S. Season One (Martha, Luis, Kate & Jane including the sad Diana-Iain Baked Alaska conflict) and my top favorite is U.S. Season Three (Tamal, Paul, Nadia, Ian, Matt & the feisty Ugne – a great group of contestants who had me in tears at the end) These seasons make GREAT GIFTS to fellow cooks! From start to finish, the show format is simply charming & I’ve learned some wonderful presentation techniques. With the shake up of judges & presenters this past year, I hope the new season(s) retain that charm. I didn’t care for the few episodes of the American Baking Show nearly as much but it also didn’t get aired long enough for producers to perfect. Finally, my only complaint to whoever is in charge of these things is that Mary & Paul’s “MASTERCLASS” is NOT AVAILABLE on DVD (followup demonstrations to the GBBS episodes) and the mountain area we live in doesn’t have the juice to view these from AMAZON so sadly I don’t have the option to view or buy them.

A five star winner!!!
A friend looked at me like I had 2 heads when I said I had never heard of Mary Berry or the Great British Baking Show. With her encouragement I bought the first 2 seasons. They arrived April 11th. Within days Season 3 was purchased. In less than a month I watched all three seasons. They are really that good! You learn about baking of course, but you also see friendship in spite of competition, joking around and people beginning to learn about themselves as they accomplish more than they thought they could. I finished season 3 tonight and cried with the winner as they realized a dream come true but also that they could make other dreams happen. Season 2 had some people who were a bit down on themselves and that got old, but all in all if you like to cook or want to like to cook, this is a great buy. We have 3 adult children still at home and even they stay in the room and watch it with us. The people just seem to draw you in. Buy it, watch it and Bake!!!

This is one of the best shows on TV. ever.
I don’t know why exactly this show works so well. I saw the first season on Netflix, and when that was taken off I bought seasons two and three on Amazon. I have never binge watched a show before, but this one (or three) was different. I didn’t watch full time, but when I had some free time, this is what I turned on. I was in tears at the end of the third season, when I was so happy for the winner. Everybody looks natural, the competition is friendly and helpful, nothing was mean or overdone. You see real people struggling to do difficult things and praising each other as they achieve them. When someone has trouble, it is acknowledged, and the other bakers are sympathetic. A profound difference from the overly formulaic chopping block nature of the American cooking competition shows. I hope they become more like this one. Congratulations, Britain, and all the contestants. I hope we get to see the original three seasons.

I’m pretty sure this is Season 7 of the series, accounting for the 4 original seasons on BBC which PBS did not rebroadcast in in the U.S. Nevertheless, the formula for the show is pretty well established and pat by this time. Anyway, I totally enjoy the show as all the contestants seem to be genuinely nice people and there is a total lack of the trash talking prevalent on American cooking contest shows. The participants’ dedication and true passion for baking comes through in each episode as well, as they’re all doing it just to win a glass cake tray.

I sent “The Great British Baking Show’ to my granddaughters in Munich and was dismayed that the DVD was coded for the UK! They only discovered the problem when they tried to view it. Since the DVD was opened, it can not be returned. Living in Canada, I had ordered this product from Amazon.de because it was to be used in Germany!! Miriam Cooper

As always, I love any episode of the Great British Bake-Off, but this DVD (as well as seasons 1 and 2) are incorrectly titled. This is not season 3, it is season 7.
