A snowy English village with a thousand secrets, bad Christmas presents, far too many decorations and a string of inexplicable murders…Surrey, 1928. When a much unloved miser dies in the village of Kilston Down, no one suspects foul play – except for famed sleuth Lord Edgington, who may just be looking for a way to avoid his awful in-laws over Christmas. But after several unconnected villagers mysteriously die in their beds, the great detective and his young assistant must track down the culprit before the bells ring for Christmas Day and the killer strikes again.

Perfectly festive but with a fiendishly wicked mystery plot, this 1920s whodunit features a cast of eccentric suspects, a witty and warm detective duo and enough twists and turns to see you through to the New Year.

A spoiler-free, standalone novel in the bestselling “Lord Edgington Investigates…” series, “The Christmas Candle Murders” is an Agatha Christie-style mystery with a dash of Downton Abbey thrown in.

    Great book
I have read all the Lord Edgington books and have enjoyed every one. The bond that has grown between Chrissy and his grandfather throughout the series is so heart warming and fun. I laugh so much at Chrissy, but he is really coming into his own. I will definitely be reading the new series, and I can’t wait.

A delightful tale, with surprising depth and twisty turns!
What a moving and (every adjective in the gamut) story! From Dickens to Brown, and every holiday-loving word-smith in between, this Christmastime mystery combines innocence and world weariness in a rather touching mull, not unlike the holiday drink described within. There are a few mysteries woven through the fabric of this tale: will they catch the culprit? Is there even a culprit? Will the family’s holiday spirit survive the deluge of cousins? Will we find out why Albert is suddenly the king of Christmas? As I was reading, I kept finding myself engaged in depthful consideration of important life questions. I was being brought to places where I could step off the safe sideline, and let myself be changed by the story. Who does that! Only a rarely gifted writer can bring the reader to those places. All the more rare in a comedic writer (and his humor is really, truly, funny!) and thus all the more precious.I do not think I spoil anything if i reveal that Brown issues a challenge to his readers to identify the literary references to Holiday classics throughout, so there is also that mystery should one choose to engage it. It is far beyond me to identify his literary references – when I look at the book in that way, it is like an artfully constructed collage, like the face of Michael Jackson composed of thousands of photographs of the artists on whose supportive shoulders his truly original work extends to infinity. As a last note, one of the special treats that keeps tickling the emotions is the emerging recognition that Chrissy has grown up to be someone I very much like.I so look forward to Lord Edgington and Chrissy as they storm the continent!

    Always a joy to read
One of my absolute favorite book series to read. The mysteries are so clever, but just as important are all the personal relationships that propel the stories. Christopher and Lord Edgington are the main detectives, but without the rest of the family and “staff” lending their thoughts and lovable and humorous presence, it wouldn’t be so much fun. I love these Christmas mysteries for all their nostalgia. Looking forward to their European travels. Highly recommended reading!

    Chrissy’s Christmas joy is infectious!!
Can a book about murder give you all the Christmas feels and leave you with a smile? Yes, this one can. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as the entire series. Chrissy’s growth as a person and a detective continue with more delightful interactions with his grandfather, parents , brother and more.. Can’t with for the next one.

    A wonderful read!
Once again we are blessed with another one of Benedict Brown’s Christmas-themed stories with Lord Edgington and his sidekick grandson, Chrissy. Highly recommend this and any of Mr. B’s books. The only downside is waiting for the next one to get released!

    I couldn’t wait
I promised myself that I would wait until it was closer to Christmas to read this, but within hours I was turning the pages. It was the expected Holiday treat! It seems like the mysteries are maturing along with Chrissy, becoming a bit more involved. I can’t wait for the grand European tour!

    Fun!
A slight departure from this author’s usual take – investigating a non-murder that may be a murder, and Christopher more in the know than Lord E, since he grew up here. Lots of twists and turns – great addition to the series! Highly recommended!,

This is a delightful book, easy to read and so Christmassy. Full of interesting characters living in such a well described, atmospheric village it’s an excellent mystery too. Highly recommended, especially for the festive season!
