It supports multiple topologies and offers broad voltage compatibility, precise dimming capabilities, and robust fault protection, making it an ideal solution for modern lighting designs.
Diodes Incorporated has introduced the AL8866Q, a new addition to its automotive-compliant LED driver portfolio. Designed for high-power LED lighting systems, this DC-switching LED driver-controller works with an external MOSFET and supports multiple topologies, including buck, boost, buck-boost, and single-ended primary-inductance converter (SEPIC). It is ideal for daytime running lights (DRL), high/low beams, fog, turn, and brake/stop lights.
The key features are:
- Wide operating voltage: 4.7V to 85V.
- 100:1 analog dimming range with ±12% output current accuracy at 20% dimming.
- PWM dimming: 100:1 dynamic range (0.1 to 1kHz).
- 1% reference tolerance ensures consistent brightness across lamps.
- Operating temperature range: -40°C to +125°C.
With a wide input power supply range it is compatible with 12V, 24V, and 48V battery power rails, offering significant flexibility. This broad range simplifies inventory management and design processes by enabling lighting designers to standardize on a single component. It features a fixed-frequency (400kHz) peak current-mode control architecture, incorporating spread spectrum frequency modulation to improve electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance. It meets the stringent CISPR 25 Class 5 standard, ensuring superior EMI compliance.
The device supports both analog and PWM dimming via its DIM pin, offering precise brightness controlIntegrated features like soft-start minimize overvoltage and overcurrent risks by gradually ramping up inductor and switch current. The AL8866Q also includes an open-drain fault output to signal conditions such as LED output overvoltage, open or short circuits, cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection, thermal shutdown, and more.
