MediaTek’s new chip brings groundbreaking performance with its all-big core design, setting new benchmarks for AI and gaming in smartphones.
MediaTek has launched the ‘Dimensity 8400’, a new premium smartphone chip developed to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) and mobile gaming. This chip introduces an innovative all big core design, marking the first time such technology has been brought to the high-end smartphone market. Built for next-generation AI applications and intensive gaming, the chip promises remarkable performance and energy efficiency, making it an ideal choice for tech enthusiasts, mobile gamers, and professionals who demand high performance in their devices.
With its eight-core Arm Cortex-A725 processor, the chip achieves clock speeds of up to 3.25GHz, providing a 41% boost in multi-core performance over its predecessor, the Dimensity 8300. This improvement is complemented by an optimised power curve, which results in a 44% reduction in peak power consumption, offering a balance between performance and efficiency. As such, it is particularly appealing to users seeking long-lasting, powerful devices for both everyday tasks and demanding applications.
In terms of graphics, the chip incorporates the Arm Mali-G720 GPU, delivering a 24% increase in peak performance compared to its earlier model. This GPU, combined with the company’s frame rate converter (MFRC) and adaptive gaming technology (MAGT) 3.0, enhances mobile gaming by ensuring smoother gameplay and real-time optimisation of game performance. Mobile gamers who prioritise high-quality visuals and smooth, immersive experiences will find this chip a perfect fit for their needs.
The chip also features a powerful NPU 880, supporting mainstream large language models (LLM/SLM/LMMs), enabling seamless AI tasks such as translation, contextual replies, and media generation. Additionally, the company’s dimensity agentic AI engine (DAE) elevates traditional AI functions into sophisticated agentic AI, which can anticipate user needs and adapt to preferences. Professionals and developers focused on AI-driven applications will benefit from these advanced features.
Dr Yenchi Lee, general manager (wireless communications business unit), MediaTek, emphasised, “Our all-big core design highlights the impressive performance and efficiency that can go hand-in-hand, so consumers don’t have to compromise.”
Furthermore, the newly launched chip includes the company’s advanced Imagiq 1080 ISP for enhanced photography and HDR recording. It also boasts support for 5G-A with speeds up to 5.17Gbps, network optimisation through network operating system (NOS) technology, and dual-screen capabilities.
The first smartphones featuring the Dimensity 8400 are expected by the end of 2024.
