Reference Design For Edge-AI Wireless ECG Holter Monitor 

The Edge-AI-ready wearable biosensing Holter reference design serves as an advanced evaluation platform for Texas Instruments’ latest technology in continuous vital sign monitoring. This design, identified as TIDA-010288, enables real-time measurement and analysis of electrocardiography (ECG), heart rate, respiration, pace pulse, temperature, and motion. It integrates multiple high-performance components to ensure accurate and efficient biosignal acquisition, processing, and transmission.

At the core of the design, the AFE159RP4 provides a highly integrated, low-power, and high-resolution solution for ECG signal acquisition, supporting up to six leads across four channels. Complementing this, the TMP119 enables precise body temperature monitoring. These measured biosignals are processed by the MSPM0 microcontroller unit (MCU), which leverages hardware acceleration for real-time arrhythmia classification. Once processed, the data is transmitted via the CC2340R5 wireless module, which supports Bluetooth® Low Energy 5.3, facilitating seamless connectivity to remote devices such as smartphones or medical monitoring systems. This connectivity allows real-time display and analysis of physiological data, ensuring timely detection and response to any cardiac irregularities.

The reference design is optimized for power efficiency, capable of operating on either two CR2032 coin-cell batteries (3V input) or a single AAA battery (1.5V input). This flexible power solution ensures extended wear times and reliability, making it well-suited for long-term, continuous monitoring applications. The inclusion of efficient DC/DC converters further enhances power management, minimizing energy consumption while maintaining high-performance data acquisition and transmission.

One of the standout features of this design is its on-device AI hardware accelerator, which enables immediate and precise detection of cardiac events. By utilizing advanced signal processing techniques, the system ensures high-resolution recording and transmits data only when necessary, significantly reducing power consumption. The compact and multiparameter Holter monitor design synchronizes ECG, respiration, and pace pulse detection within a single chip, making it ideal for wearable applications.

Wireless data transfer is made seamless by the ultra-low-power 2.4GHz Bluetooth® Low Energy 5.3 module, powered by an Arm® Cortex®-M0+ processor. This ensures stable and energy-efficient communication between the wearable device and external monitoring systems. Additionally, Texas Instruments provides the SimpleLink™ Connect mobile application, which allows real-time visualization of ECG signals, arrhythmia classification, respiration rates, pace pulse, and temperature readings, enhancing user accessibility and ease of use.
