Battery Protection IC For Safer Cars

The battery protection IC makes backup power smaller using one lithium battery instead of many. It works in high heat and keeps automotive systems safe and efficient.

ABLIC has launched the S-19161A/B IC, enabling automotive manufacturers to significantly reduce the size of backup power systems. Operating at 125°C, this IC allows the replacement of multiple nickel hydride batteries with a single lithium battery in emergency backup systems.

The IC is designed for lithium-ion and polymer rechargeable battery packs, providing reliable protection and performance optimization.

It is particularly suitable for automotive applications, including emergency call (e-Call) systems, Telematics Control Units (TCUs), smart keys, and backup power systems. Its ability to operate in high-temperature environments makes it ideal for devices that require enhanced thermal resistance and safety.

When the main power supply fails, traditional automotive backup power systems rely on multiple nickel hydride batteries to maintain emergency functions. The S-19161A/B’s advanced protection features support the use of a single lithium battery while maintaining the same functionality in a smaller form factor.

The IC operates across a wide temperature range of -40℃ to 125℃, significantly exceeding the conventional 85℃ limit of most protection ICs. This capability enhances protection for single-cell automotive batteries and ensures improved safety in high-temperature environments.

To enhance safety, the IC features three levels of discharge overcurrent protection: discharge overcurrent 1, discharge overcurrent 2, and load short-circuiting. These protection mechanisms help isolate abnormal currents more effectively, achieving industry-leading detection voltage accuracy and improving the overall safety of application devices.

Additionally, the IC offers industry-leading overcharge detection accuracy of ±15mV. This high precision optimizes battery performance while maintaining strong safety protections, ensuring reliable operation in automotive applications.

Designed for emergency call (e-call) systems and Telematics Control Units (TCUs), the S-19161A/B meets Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) requirements and is undergoing AEC-Q100 Grade 1 certification.
