An advanced emergency light unit (ELU) promises uninterrupted lighting in train coaches during emergencies.
A new emergency light unit (ELU), developed to enhance passenger safety during power outages and emergencies, has been introduced for Indian railways. Designed by MIC electronics limited (MICEL), a leader in LED lighting and display technologies, the ELU is poised for deployment in select Vande Bharat train services, following rigorous pilot testing. The final approval is expected within 15 to 25 days.
The ELU is made for diverse railway systems, including long-distance and suburban services. It aims to improve emergency response, particularly in high-risk zones and crowded routes. Key features include automatic activation during power failures, long-lasting LED illumination for extended backup, and compatibility with existing railway infrastructure. These features ensure visibility and operational continuity during critical situations. Moreover, the product targets railway operators, engineers, and safety personnel responsible for passenger welfare, while addressing the needs of travelers who rely on uninterrupted services for their security and convenience.
The rail coach factory (RCF) has already granted capacity and caliber assessment (CCA) approval for the ELU, underscoring its readiness for integration into railway operations. The initial testing phase has focused on compatibility and durability, with railway authorities collaborating on further refinements. Deployment plans prioritise high-density routes and aim to address safety challenges comprehensively.
“The emergency light unit redefines our capabilities and emphasises safety. It reflects our commitment to innovation and our partnership with Indian railways,” said Rakshit Mathur, CEO, MIC electronics limited.
Following successful trials, MICEL plans a phased rollout of the ELU, with its introduction contingent on performance metrics and user feedback. The company has also committed to training railway staff for smooth adoption of the technology and establishing support teams to address potential issues.
MICEL, known for its energy-efficient LED systems in public infrastructure, continues to play a vital role in modernising railway safety. By integrating advanced lighting solutions, the company reinforces Indian railway’s emphasis on enhancing passenger security.
The ELU launch is a significant step in emergency preparedness, aligning with ongoing efforts to ensure safer, more reliable travel for millions of passengers across the nation.
