Natural gas leaks can be detected by smell, but what if there was a way to sense them automatically? A new sensor is making this possible—learn more.

Interlink Electronics, Inc., a provider of sensors and printed electronic solutions for applications such as Human-Machine Interface (HMI), environmental sensing, and IoT devices, has introduced a new addition to its electrochemical gas sensor portfolio. The 110-37x sensor family can detect TBM (Tert-Butyl Mercaptan) and THT (Tetra-Hydrothiophene), compounds added to natural gas pipelines to create a detectable odour for safety.
“We are very pleased that our team can deliver this breakthrough family of TBM and THT sensors based on innovative electrochemistry technology and materials. We have successfully preserved Interlink’s proven advantages of high performance, small size, and cost competitiveness in this family,” said Dr. Sreeni Rao, Vice President of Product Management at Interlink Electronics. “Even though TBM and THT gases are ‘smellable’, an automated and reliable way to detect these gases is very much needed wherever natural gas is consumed. This solution will be quite attractive to commercial and domestic users, as well as to gas utilities and gas producers that are looking to make their products safer.”

“Through our portfolio of gas and environmental sensors, Interlink is committed to providing solutions that enhance safety and security in domestic and commercial settings,” added Steven N. Bronson, CEO and President of Interlink Electronics. “The introduction of this family of industry-first odour sensing products once again establishes Interlink Electronics as a leader in gas sensing innovation.”
Interlink Electronics product portfolio includes force, piezo-electric, HMI, wearable sensors, gas sensors, instruments, and systems. Customers across industrial, medical, automotive, consumer, wearables, and IoT markets use its products. Its expertise in materials science, manufacturing, embedded electronics, firmware, and software supports the development of cost-effective custom solutions.
