When you understand what you’re buying, this tablet is an OUTSTANDING value
I own two PC’s, an iPhone, an iPad, and a Kindle Oasis. I didn’t NEED another device for reading Kindle ebooks, but the Prime Day price was irresistible, as was the price for the tri-fold case. I have been more than happy with this little tablet. It’s eight inches instead of seven inches (which I would have preferred, my wife loves the one we bought for her) in size, but it includes twice the memory of the other Kindle Fire I was considering as well as a USB C charging port which the seven-inch Fire doesn’t have. I’ve found the form factor as easy to use as the seven-inch Fire, especially with the tri-fold case, which is very similar in style and function to the original iPad cases, and also an excellent value. Weight isn’t bad either.
When you purchase a Kindle Fire, PLEASE UNDERSTAND that you are NOT buying a premium Android tablet, nor are you paying anything close to what a premium Android tablet would cost. This Kindle Fire shines as an ebook reader. It offers more display options for viewing books (including multiple column options) than a Kindle PaperWhite or Oasis, more memory for storing books, and a speaker that allows you to use the “Read Aloud” feature (not quite as nice as a real audio book, but getting better all the time) without having to plug in a headset. The Kindle Fire is significantly lower in cost than a PaperWhite or Oasis (I’m not sure Oasis is still available. If it’s not I think that’s a shame.) I like to read Kindle books on the Fire using a landscape orientation with two columns. The folded tri-fold case provides a nice viewing angle.
The Kindle Fire 8 inch offers a halfway decent web browser, which I use mostly to read online newspapers and complete the New York Times’ daily Wordle and Spelling Bee.
The Amazon App Store (I don’t believe the Google Playstore is available for Kindle tablets) offers a decent selection of games and other apps, including a version of Microsoft 365 that actually CAN be used. There’s also a Yahtzee app that I really like, especially because the ads are so unintrusive, and a little railroad game that’s more challenging than it looks. Both of these are great for avoiding boredom when waiting for a meeting.
The onscreen keyboard is reasonably responsive and easy to use. With all apps, it’s important to remember that, compared to premium Android tablets, a Kindle Fire is SLOW!!! That doesn’t bother me at all when I consider what I paid for this tablet. It’s an EXCELLENT value, in my opinion, better than I expected it to be.

    Great price!
My grandma needed a new tablet to take on her gambling trips. This tablet happened to be on sale so I ordered it. It came in 2 days with Amaon prime. Easy to setup. The wifi connectivity is perfect. Screen size is great for playing games and watching videos. She also used this tablet to take notes at a women’s conference. Very sleek design and holds a battery charge!

Great Value for a Versatile Tablet
recently purchased the Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet, and I have been thoroughly impressed with its performance and features, especially considering its affordable price point.
    Pros:
Display: The 8” HD screen is bright and clear, making it great for watching videos, reading eBooks, or browsing the web. The colors are vibrant, and the touch response is smooth and accurate.
Battery Life: One of the standout features is the impressive battery life. I can easily get a full day of use on a single charge, which is perfect for long trips or extended use without needing to be tethered to an outlet.
Performance: The tablet is equipped with a quad-core processor that handles multitasking well. Apps open quickly, and switching between them is seamless. For everyday tasks like streaming, gaming, and browsing, the performance is more than adequate.

Great software held back by mediocre hardware
I got the 2022 Fire HD 8 to replace my 2013 Fire HDX 7. While the software on the new tablet is a huge upgrade, the hardware is rather lackluster (the decade-old HDX had an excellent display and processor, even by today’s standards). The Fire HD 8 is still perfectly usable for most basic tasks as long as you put up with occasional stutters, and the 8″ size is a sweet spot that is not too large for ebook reading but also not too small for watching videos. There are very few alternatives in the compact tablet market and pretty much none at this price point.
    Hardware:
The display has a resolution of 1280×800, so it’s not full HD (compared to 1920×1200 on the old HDX 7 as well as the current Fire HD 10). The lack of sharpness is most noticeable with smaller text, but otherwise the resolution is not really an issue when reading ebooks (I use a medium font size) or when watching videos.
The stereo speakers are also pretty good for a tablet of this size, certainly good enough for watching videos. For music, I use wireless headphones paired via Bluetooth, but there is also a wired headphone jack for those who prefer that.
The MediaTek processor is perhaps the biggest letdown on the hardware side, it barely gets the job done and chokes if you try to do anything fancy.
Battery life is excellent. Since my last charge 3 days ago, I’ve used the tablet about an hour each day (mix of reading, music and videos) and I have just under 80% remaining. That is pretty much in line with the advertised battery life of 13 hours, and it loses very little charge on standby. Using a USB-C charger capable of fast charging (not the bundled one), it charges fully in under 2 hours.
    Software:
Fire OS is a pleasure to use, especially if you’re into the Amazon ecosystem. Obviously it comes preloaded with all the Amazon apps, but my favorite part of the UI is the Library tab on the home screen, which provides quick access to recently viewed content in each app (such as Kindle books or recently visited websites). It’s basically an improved version of the carousel on my old HDX, and it’s a really useful feature that other tablets could benefit from.
Fire OS comes with the Amazon Appstore – it is technically possible to get access to the Google Play Store, but this is probably not the right tablet if you use a ton of apps. The Amazon Appstore does have apps for most subscription video services, however there is no official YouTube app (I just use the browser and it works fine).
There is even a split-screen mode that lets you run two apps side-by-side, but the underpowered processor makes this unusable in practice. I even had the tablet lock up once when playing around with the split-screen feature. It’s a shame because the software features really deserve a better processor.
Overall, it’s a decent tablet for the price and works fine for reading books, listening to music and watching videos. That “decent” could turn into “excellent” with a faster processor and a full HD (1080p) screen, and I would gladly pay a bit extra for that.
