Very Pretty, Very Poor Quality Control, But A Couple Hacks Make it Useable.
So, my experience with this product didn’t really start off on the right foot. The first one I received was damaged and the cover on the battery compartment could not be removed (guessing it was jammed in wrong). I was able to get a replacement and this review is based on that one, which arrived intact with a functional battery cover.Since I’d already gotten a damaged one, I did have some awareness about the delicateness of this product. This can make fitting the upright pieces into the slots on the base somewhat challenging, especially if they don’t fit properly as was the case with the pieces I received. While the deer and the smallest tree fit without any trouble, the two largest trees, which are connected by the attached light string, were not perfectly fitted to their slots. It’s impossible to force them in without damaging the delicate branches, but they can be filed back a bit to take off the excess to get a proper fit. Of course, no one should have to do this – during the manufacturing process, the fit should be checked prior to these being cleared for boxing and shipment. That’s on the manufacturer. While this item is low cost, it should still be able to be assembled without this somewhat major hiccup.I got the multicolor one because I liked the colors of the lights shown in the listing and because everything else in my house has warm white lighting and I thought it would be nice to have a display with some contrast to this. Unfortunately, what I didn’t realize is that these lights flash nonstop, creating a sort of “forest dance party” effect that’s not my cup of tea. I would have preferred if they were going to flash that they flash more slowly to create a transitional effect instead of the strobe light effect they actually have. There’s no way to change this – they’re either on or off, so that’s a major disappointment for me. There’s also no built in timer, so you have to physically turn it on and off. It uses two AAA batteries that are not included.These product issues are unfortunate because the design itself is really beautiful, and since it’s not necessarily all that “Christmasy” aside from the star cutouts on the smallest tree and deer, it’s something that could easily stay on display throughout the winter season. I will likely modify it so that the tree bases fit properly into the slots and remove the lights and use my own by simply cutting through the wires of the exiting lights which are glued onto the back of the two largest trees. There are large globs of glue holding them in place, so scraping this off would likely do irreparable damage, so cutting seems more reasonable. This display could work with any kind of back lighting, so use your imagination if you’re into this look.For around $10 at the time of this review, this item could have been a stellar find. Unfortunately, there are just too many issues with the quality to rate it higher than three stars. Since I’m into crafting and DIY, it’s pretty straightforward for me to find workarounds for these issues, but I don’t think most people are going to be willing and many more won’t be able to modify the product to be workable. I’m still giving it three stars because it’s still usable despite the issues I encountered, but frankly, it should be perfect out of the box.
