Works great!
I bought this bear bell to put on my backpack for our recent mountain hiking vacation. It is very well-made and loud enough to alert bears of our presence without being obnoxious. I was impressed at how well it was silenced once inside the mesh bag. Great value – it was super inexpensive. Would buy again!

Placed it on my Bassetts harness for the hiking trails. You can hear it well and when we are in more public areas I place it in the little bag and itâs silent.

Makes Noise When Shaken
So what can one say about a big Jingle bell?Firstly, I bought the “original version” of this on sale – fair price, I think, and maybe a better product than the newer, painted ones? Mine is a large silver jingle bell riveted to a nylon strap with mating velcro straps, one formed in an open loop and the other a straight length that closes the loop so the bell can hang by the strap. Nice yellow bear stitched into the strap (rather than “Coghlan’s”. Sewn to the straight nylon strap length is the “final” circumference cord which attaches and closes a mesh sack with a strong magnet actually sewn at the base of the sack. When the jingle bell is in the sack, the bell doesn’t ring, but if shaken hard, does come free and roll about making a dull noise. While it’s held to something on by that velcro’d strap loop, those riding mountain bikes might be concerned that the rivet and even the sewn-on 1-1/4″ by 3/4″ hook and loop clothing grade velcro might not be durable enough to the challenge of constant strain. Taking the bell on and off by pulling the velcro apart should be done carefully, since sewn-on velcro tends to strain and burst the threads as much as pull free of the hook and loops. Further, for this “original version”, the hook velcro is aggressive on the mesh sack cordage, too, fraying it.Not that this is a poor product, but “… got to know limitations…”.USE: Now as far as I can tell, a “bear bell” may well attract a curious bear rather than scare it off. I use these on “bear bags”, that is, food bags hung up on a clear branch of a tree, at least 10′ up, and 10′ clear of the tree. The bell will alert me that someone is playing with the bag, and it’s not Santa. That let’s you shine a light, shout, and scare off the raccoon or whatever by poking your head out of your cozy shelter a distance away. In such a use durability of rivets and velcro are much less a concern.IF you insist on wearing this on your belt or on a handlebar, you might want to always be careful separating the velcro and inspect the rivet each use.

Cheap bell decent for what it is
The bell is pretty simple and stays attached well enough. Only downside is the magnet seems to come out of place essily and makes the bell ring when you dont want it to. Works well if you arent knocking it around on things. I got two even though i ordered and paid for one, not sure if that was intentional or not but im not complaining on that.

Essential for Safe Hiking with My Dog
Coghlan’s Bear Bell has become an indispensable part of our hiking gear. I use it whenever I hike with my dog, and itâs fantastic for keeping track of her while she hikes off-leash. The bell easily attaches to her harness, and its sound helps me locate her quickly. Plus, it serves the additional benefit of deterring bears, adding an extra layer of safety on our adventures. Itâs a must-have for anyone who enjoys hiking with their furry friend. Highly recommended!

Perfect for hiking
this is a small lightweight bell that fits nicely on your backpack or belts or your shoe. It has a nice cover that has a magnet on it so when you donât need it to ring, itâs easy to cover up. Itâs solo hiking to have some kind of noise to stay safer.

Great Bell
Iâm not a fan of wearing a bell while hiking, but I know itâs necessary when Iâm alone in certain areas. As far as bear bells go, this one is great. I love that the mesh cover has a magnet to silence the bell when needed, and it easily attaches to various spots on my backpack.

Not real loud
The size and weight is convenient. The appearance is nice. I like that there is a magnet inside the mesh bag to stop the bell from moving, but it’s not very loud. My nicnak bells are louder.

Works fantastic and can tell build quality is good.Perfect for those who are adventurous and go into bear country. Always best not to surprise animals and reduce risk of incidents. The bell can be silenced with the bag included and directly attached to the bell with use of a magnet embedded in the bag which holds the bell still. It rings loud enough but not obnoxious to you if youâre on a long hike. Attaches to any point on bag via velcro strap and when in use the bag stays attached hanging off the side.Perfect cheap little device and I recommend all who are adventurous and outdoorsy to get this product as another level of saftey.

Top!
