Innovative recipes for eating on a tight budget
Well written, thoughtful and creative cookbook that focuses on stretching every penny and making delicious meals on a low budget. Full color photos accompany every recipe and there are also guides for using leftovers in new ways, plus cooking insight and advice on planning diverse and healthy meals. The only negative is that the cost per meal/serving is a little outdated and no longer accurate, but it still gives you an idea.

Very recommended for novice cooks and for those on a tight budget- but with appeal for everyone
This is an enticing cookbook, suitable for everyone, with enticing, mostly fast and easy recipes that are nonetheless frugal- mostly because they de-emphasize meat. While there are a few time-consuming recipes, most are not- and there are tons of ideas for altering and re-combining elements to make new dishes. It’s really more about an approach to cooking than about recipes per se… though the recipes look delicious! The directions are also very clearly written, so this is suitable for people of all levels of skill in the kitchen, including beginners.A particular benefit of buying this book is that Brown has committed to giving away one copy to someone in need for every one sold.I am lucky that I personally do not have to adhere to a strict food budget (but I still want to cook lots of these recipes!). It’s even more important for people who do have a strict and limited budget, since it’s way too easy to fall into the routine and boring; I remember those times.Unfortunately, it does not address people who are stuck in a food desert, which is a huge problem.Very recommended, both as an accessible basic cookbook that will improve skills for the novice, and for enticing recipes that are very cost-effective.Edited to add: The PDF of it is available for free on the author’s website!

Great pictures and simple recipes that can be modified to taste
Good and Cheap gets a gold star for it’s full page color photographs of each dish. The book seeks to help families eat well for $4 a day per person, so it wins in the inexpensive ingredient category. There are lots of recipes for vegetables that look appetizing. However I will not be trying the tuna fish spaghetti recipe. I don’t care how poor you are. You don’t need to put tuna in tomato sauce. My other complaint is that a good portion of the dishes require more than the 30 minutes I allot to make a meal. Many recipes call for beans (soaked overnight), potatoes (which take awhile to soften), and homemade dough (two hours of resting?). Moral of the story: Being poor sucks because you have to PLAN AHEAD. That’s why fast food is so attractive. It’s cheap and you don’t have to plan. Despite the need for advanced planning, there are many easy to follow recipes in Good and Cheap. Some dishes come with additional optional ingredients or variations. The recipes are simple for the novice but easily modified for the more experienced or adventurous good and you won’t ruin the food if you do something different. They are good the way they are written and they can be better if you tweak them a bit. I made the vegetable quiche and modified it a bit by replacing some vegetables with bacon. It was delicious.

    Best Budget Cookbook Ever!!!
This cookbook was given to me by the chef of a cooking class I attended for people on fixed incomes. This cookbook actually succeeds where most other budget-conscious cookbooks fail. It actually does provide a means to prepare delicious, inexpensive meals..I have read lots of cookbooks that claim to be for budget-conscious consumers, yet when you read the recipes you find they either call for too many expensive ingredients, are made in quantities too large to be economical, so that even though one serving may cost, say $5.00, you have to shell out $30 for six servings; contain recipes that are unappealing; and/or call for unhealthy, processed, canned and/ot frozen ingredients. This cookbook thankfully commits none of these sins. The recipes are enticing. They call for ingredients that, with very few exceptions, are inexpensive and readily available in standard grocery stores, All the recipes are made from whole foods, and none call for processed ingredients. Most recipes require only a modest amount of preparation. There are some exceptions, like dumplings, homemade pasta and pierogies, which are time-consuming. I personally avoid those because they take a lot of effort, though the author says you can freeze them for convenience. Most of the recipes are very forgiving and easily adaptable.

    A beautifully produced book!
Plenty good, but cheap food to make the recipes – not so much. A very nice book, though, just that the recipes are not quite inexpensive enough for its intended audience of people living in poverty. Maybe when it was first published it fit the bill, but today despite the myth of low or no inflation, food prices have soared and those on fixed incomes are most affected by the higher costs that $4 a day cannot cover.

    Buy it again, Sam
You know you love a book when you buy a second copy when the first gets damaged. An accidental spill left quite a few pages stuck together once the book dried. Bummer! I was happy to find it could still be purchased, and here. It’s not that anything was new to me (I’ve been frugal since my first college apartment), but now that I am retired and dealing with, as they say, “a limited income,” it’s such a good pep talk and reminder that it’s possible to eat well even though meals of steak and lobster are simply not possible.

Buy this book for everyone you know
I’ve had this cookbook for years since going to college and living really lean, and I’ve gifted it to so many friends, it’s so well made and accessible, and the recipes rule. I love that she cares about making delicious healthy meals with things like leftovers and staples that usually hang around. I’ve used this cookbook more than any other. It’s my ultimate fav. The roasted chicken and the jambalaya recipes are killer and such good bases to iterate on.

Buch-Cover). Sehr zu empfehlen!

I am so happy that I purchased this book. It makes so much sense, uses really basic ingredients to make really nice dishes. It is less a cookbook and more a “way of life” book by making you look at food a bit differently. Well worth it if you would like to start using whole foods more, less prepared foods. It resets your thinking and shows you how simple it can be.

Great book. I’m the pastor at a church an bought this book for a few reasons:1) Because I wanted to save money on my grocery bill.2) Because I’m a bachelor and through years of cafeteria food at university I’ve essentially forgotten how to cook or do groceries. So I wanted a book that had a simple guide as to how to set up, run, and stock my kitchen with a lot of good quick recipes.3) Because I heard Leanne Brown interviewed on the radio, loved what she was doing, and wanted to test the book before recommending it to my church to give out in the community. This fulfills all the above criteria superbly. I should also note that there is a deal for bulk purchases for organizations like churches, food banks, etc. So you can get a reduced rate if you’re handing it out to your community. Anyway, GFC goes through quickly and in just enough details sort of all the facets of keeping your kitchen and cooking for yourself. $4/Day is obviously going to depend on your locale but I feel most of the recipes are pretty affordable. Follow her guidelines and you’ll be eating fairly healthily for fairly cheap. Definitely recommend.

Completed this book in 1 hour, flagged some recipes and can’t wait to try them. I really like the layout of the book as well.
