A meditative love letter to the sport of cycling which explores how the cultivation of a tangible skill can shed new light on age-old questions of selfhood, meaning, and purpose.
Interweaving a deeply personal narrative of elite-level cycling and mental health struggles with an evocative history of Western philosophy from Plato to the Existentialists, The Art of Cycling explores the limits of rationality and how the visceral, embodied nature of sport ultimately has the potential to redeem us from the painful, locked-in isolation of our own heads.
In the tradition of philosophical road trip titles like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and On the Road, The Art of Cycling turns a critical eye towards our increasingly disconnected digital lives —showing how re-engaging with the material world can breathe new vitality into everyday existence and serve as a countervailing force against the sense of detachment which has come to characterize modern life for so many.

Fantastic read–Not just for cyclists!
I very much enjoyed this introspective read. Hibbard takes the reader on a compelling journey through his past as an elite cyclist and willingly dives into examining the motivations that will ring true to many elite athletes pursuing a singular goal. I loved the cycling parts of this book, but the author is also particularly insightful and vulnerable when reckoning with the impact of generational trauma on his life and coming to grips with how our sense of what is meaningful and purposeful in our life changes with the inescapable passage of time. Hibbard doesn’t shy away from confronting the challenging questions of what it means to be human. An excellent read!

A clear and promising exploration of philosophy and physical movement.

Absolute classic must read before you die book
Like the Author, I raced bikes professionally and have ridden from San Francisco down the Big Sur coast half a dozen times. I had never examined the deeper meaning of cycling in my life before reading this despite having 10,000+ hours of pedaling with brain cycles well underutilized. The Art of Cycling was an exceptionally enjoyable read that took me a big step closer to understanding meaning in life by uncovering the profound role role of the cycling experience (or more broadly the experience of any hobby, sport, or craft).

Relatable to anyone who has poured their life into something
Anyone who works hard enough at something will eventually ask themselves if the effort was/is worth it. Hibbard explores the forces that drive us to reach the pinnacle of any pursuit and the pitfalls associated with them. Years after ending his pursuit of professional cycling, a bike ride with friends down the California brings up old questions and new perspective.

An honest journeyâ¦
A great book on cycling and philosophy!

Disappointed
I bought the book what seemed to be about the enjoyment of cycling and ended up being a philosophy course on existentialism. I really didnât buy the book to go down that path. It gets dry and tedious much of the time. I probably wonât finish reading. Just a heads up for future purchasers.
