Growing vegetables and raising livestock is only the beginning of a successful homestead — that fresh food goes to waste unless you can properly prepare, cook, and preserve it. Andrea Chesman shows you how to bridge the gap between field and table, covering everything from curing meats and making sausage to canning fruits and vegetables, milling flour, working with sourdough, baking no-knead breads, making braises and stews that can be adapted to different cuts of meat, rendering lard and tallow, pickling, making butter and cheese, making yogurt, blanching vegetables for the freezer, making jams and jellies, drying produce, and much more. You’ll learn all the techniques you need to get the most from homegrown foods, along with dozens of simple and delicious recipes, most of which can be adapted to use whatever you have available.
Also available in this series: The Backyard Homestead, The Backyard Homestead Book of Building Projects, The Backyard Homestead Seasonal Planner, and The Backyard Homestead Guide to Raising Farm Animals.

Handy Book For Those New to Homesteading
This book reads easy and the pictures are helpful. It has everything from making cheese, canning/preserving, and baking with items from your garden. The section on how to butcher different meats is very insightful. I own almost all of the Backyard Homestead books and this is one of the most useful ones.

Missing a key bit of info
First let me say this is an EXCELLENT book, full of great knowledge, but I gave it 4 stars because it actually is not a complete farm to table book. It does not include one very important thing… How to properly and humanely cull the animals. I already know how to raise them, but there were some wonderful little tidbits I found interesting, and there is fantastic information on how to process the animals once they are dispatched. However, if you donât have the proper information on how to do so, you can damage the meat or end up making the animal suffer. This should have been included, regardless of peopleâs feelings regarding meats, itâs not a true farm to table without this information.5/27/20 edit:I still am really enjoying this book and all it has to offer, and after some research I found âThe Ultimate Guide to Butchering, Smoking, Curing, Sausage, and Jerky Makingâ by Philip Hasheider. Between these two resources I have the detailed information on what I was looking for when I made my purchase of the book. Itâs a great started and overview, and to be fair, the culling processes are quite detailed and really do need their own separate book. Iâm ok with my kids seeing everything in this book, but as my oldest is 7, and I have 3 boys, they donât really need detailed instructions on how to kill or skin anything.

I love these books for the ease of information given
I’m a fan of all the Backyard Homestead books, I own quite a few of them. I have yet to delve deep into this book but I look forward to learning new homesteading skills with it. I love these books for the ease of information given, the type and illustrations are stylish and cohesive throughout all the books, and the overall knowledge I’ve gained owning them. Thank you!

This book is the best helping hand I have in my homestead kitchen. This has been another great addition to this series of books (of which I have every single book). These books are always my top go to and this one is exactly that for my kitchen.
