Craft your own affirmations

If you’ve been feeling down for some time, you’re probably accustomed to hearing repetitive, cruel thoughts in your head about your character, the world you live in, or your future. One way to combat these thoughts is to develop and use affirmations. Affirmations are statements, or mantras, that can work directly against negative ruminations. This exercise helps you write your own.

Make a gratitude list

When your self-esteem needs a boost, bringing to mind what you are grateful for can go a long way toward helping you feel better about yourself and your life. Crafting this list isn’t about convincing yourself that everything’s great but about recognizing that there are some great things, no matter how small, that you can appreciate every day.

Meditate on stress

Stress can make us feel more tense and irritable, which in turn can cause some people to act out and say or do things that they didn’t mean to say or do. You may not know how to handle these emotions yet. That’s okay, and you don’t have to know what to do at that moment. This exercise can help you begin to cope when your stress level feels out of control.

Has truly helped me get to know myself
I’ve actually found a lot of the exercises extremely helpful, but also extremely difficult which I guess is why I have the book in the first place! I’m only on page 39 but I love, love, love this workbook so far!!

Great Content, But Received a Used Copy
The CBT Workbook for Mental Health offers practical, evidence-based exercises that can truly help transform negative thoughts and improve well-being. The content is clear, actionable, and very helpful for anyone looking to apply Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques in their daily life. Unfortunately, I had to return the book as it arrived used, with writing and highlighting, when I was expecting a new copy. Despite this, the material itself looked promising and I plan to repurchase a clean version when it goes back on sale.

For those who don’t have health insurance.
This book did what multiple therapists charging thousands of dollars did. If you’re serious about mental health improvement and you’re WILLING TO DO THE WORK, this book is incredible. Be prepared. Floods of tears hit these pages, but it does what it’s supposed to do.

Wonderfully helpful whether you’ve had a CBT therapist before, or if it’s new to you
I’ve had a great experience before receiving in-person Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but I needed a tune-up. This book has come to the rescue with a great review of CBT and cognitive distortions, and a ton of worksheets and exercises to help you put the ideas into action in your life. The chapter titles give a very good overview of what you can expect, and include “Growing Self-Esteem and Self-Acceptance,” “Managing Stress, Anxiety, and Anger,” and “Letting Go of Guilt and Shame.” I appreciate that the worksheets include time estimates so you can get an idea of what you’re getting into when you dig into them. Also useful are the “lessons learned” sections where you review what you’ve learned and reflect on it.While I’m already a fan of CBT and was pretty familiar with it before reading this book, my feeling is that it is written clearly and carefully enough to provide a useful intro to anyone who hasn’t yet encountered this method. The world would be a much healthier, happier place if everyone, including those who don’t even think they need therapy, read this book and did these exercises – everyone can benefit from self-reflection and from clearer thinking, and this book makes space for that work to be done.

I’m working through this book slowly. What I like so far is the way things are explained, then followed by the exercises. I like that each exercise gives the time it takes to do the exercise which makes it easy to decide how to plan doing them. Some of the exercises make me have to really think and the reflections at the end of the chapter are good. I love that the book is in colour and the pages are quite thick and smooth, making it nice to write in.

This is a great workbook for anyone that is alive – even if you are not depressed or anxious it can help you navigate life easier, with less stress, and more dignity and enjoyment. Some issues with the book:1. Internet/Social Media addiction is not mentioned despite the book being from 2021 – it seems like it was written decades earlier and just “updated” to make it seem fresh. These issues are at the forefront of anxiety and depression in youth and they were not addressed, which is quite strange. Of course, you can apply the principles to any situation, but still, it’s like the elephant in the room.2. Some editing choices are strange. For example, DEARMAN technique was presented too briefly and then skipped over. There should have been better explanations and examples for each letter of the acronym. It is a sloppy choice.3. Another editing choice was to insert some excercises into unrelated categories – as if they didn’t know where to put them and just squeezed them in. I would rather see a separte sub-chapter that mentions “Other Techniques” – otherwise it’s just confusing.Other than that, again, the book presents dozens of tools to be used and applied to improve your life.
