Are boys harder to potty train? The answer is no! — Tips & Tricks for Potty Training Boys

Boys are not harder to potty train!

While studies show that boys commonly potty train later than girls, it does not mean that boys have a harder time with the process (or that you will either!).And the difference in time is a matter of days or months, not years.

With both boys and girls, it’s more important to focus on your child’s developmental progress than on their age.

After all, each child is different and will achieve potty training in their own time.

To Sit or Stand

During the early stages of potty training, have your boy pee while sitting on the potty. Why? To keep things simple by teaching him to sit for both urination and bowel movements.

Once your child masters sitting on the potty, you can begin to teach him how to pee standing if you’re using a potty chair. However, there’s no rush with this. He can pee sitting for as long as he likes.

Target Practice!

When you decide to teach your son to urinate while standing, he may enjoy having toilet targets like Cheerios so that he has something to aim for when going potty.

You can also use food coloring so that your child can see what color the water turns when their pee makes it into the toilet!

    Great for busy working parents!
I bought this book as a guide to potty training my 2.5 year old. I debated between this one and the oh crap book, but ultimately picked this one for a few reasons. First, given that the author is a licensed psychologist, I knew her method would include an empathic approach that would align with my parenting style. Second, my husband and I are full time working parents and we had only a long weekend to begin potty training before our child was back at his daycare which requires that the children wear a diaper or underwear (they cannot go commando per state regulations). For this reason, I felt this book was a better fit than the oh crap method, which apparently requires weeks or months of the child going commando. This just wasn’t an option for us. Additionally, I heard that the oh crap method discourages the use to rewards, and I suspected my son would respond much better to earning rewards (I was right, he did). Overall, this was a great book that helped us get started on our potty training journey. I liked that the author included specific wording to use with the child. And she also included a list of questions to ask daycare, which I utilized. We are early in our potty training journey, but our child is doing great with this method so far. I would recommend this book, especially to busy working parents. It was a quick read, which was key and during the process I reread specific sections.

    Best toilet training option!!
Oh crap versus first time parents guide to potty training.I read both so you don’t have to!TL;DR: First Time Parents Guide is the clear winner! Both use the same basic so-called boot camp method: spend a soul-sucking weekend (ideally 3 day weekend), with your toddler completely bottomless, watch them like a hawk, prompt them to sit on the toilet with some sort of frequency (20-30 min) or if they’re showing any cues of peeing and pooping. The instructions for you as the caregiver progress from there.Where Dr Jazmine’s book stands out is that the method utilizes the positive parenting approach which as a behavioral therapist myself I know is evidence based for getting outcomes in behavior change.Oh Crap subtly shades positive parenting and also encourages the use of negative consequences for accidents once you feel your child has the hang of toilet training (please don’t do this. For starters it’s highly subjective when you think your kid knows their own cues to use the toilet and also research clearly shows positive reinforcement is the most successful way to get behavior change or to learn a new skill.)Oh Crap suggests doing overnight training (and includes some scary comments about bladder atrophy that I’m sure are not accurate) at the same time as daytime training (as in set alarms at 2am & 5am and pick up your dead weight mostly asleep toddler’s body onto the toilet – it’s a no for me!) whereas Dr Jazmine cites actual evidence that doing both simultaneously is not necessary nor even developmentally appropriate.Dr Jazmine’s book is also much shorter and has a page of chapter highlights at the end of each chapter with key take aways/points.My one point of contention is that Dr Jazmine recommends using food as a reward which as an eating disorders therapist I disagree with and also she recommends foods that are choking hazards for kids under 4 such as popcorn and chips. Some of you reading this do not care about food as rewards and feel ok with chips as a snack in which case I say to you: Dr Jazmine’s book, start to finish, is perfect for you!For everyone else: Dr Jazmine’s book is perfect for you! 10/10 would recommend!

    Excellent, respectful potty training book
Let me first start by saying I have been incredibly reluctant to read ANY potty training book, as so many I read reviews on did not seem to be respectful, and used lots of bribery tecniques that I was just not ok with. I’ve been following the author on IG, and LOVE her respectful methods, so I was SO excited to see her come out with this book. And it did NOT disappoint. It is so respectful of both the child & the parents, and approaches potty training in such a respectful & matter of fact way. The book is easy to read (no unnecessary fluff – cause who has time for that when you are a mom!), with tons of great tips, and some amazing reframes that were SO beneficial. Feeling a lot more confident starting our potty journey and started some things already to really prep (which I loved that this step was emphasized, as I would have skipped right over it!!) both myself & child. If you’re looking for a great book for potty training – GET THIS ONE 🙂

    Potty training
I liked the book but the author had some ideas that I didn’t use. Like letting the baby be naked for 3 days. You can still get good ideas though.

    Excellent resource
This is a great book; it helped my wife and I tremendously as we potty trained our less-than-2-year-old girl. Well written, laid out, and helpful for the gambit of potty training issues. Using the methods here, we successfully potty trained our daughter within the span of a few days. Of course, she is still learning self regulation to stop what she is doing to go potty every time when she needs to, but she knows and understand the process and can do it all by herself. I would recommend this book and method to any of my parenting friends. Well worth it.

    Good read
Good read for a first time potty training parent, but every child is so different that it’s hard to know what actually works until you try. It’s great to have plenty of potty training options. We did the 3 day no underwear/ diaper route and it worked for us with our first. Not sure what to expect for the next 2 rounds of potty training!

    Worked like a charm
I purchased this book long before actually potty training my son (at 2.5 years old). What I most appreciated about it were the insightful parts about knowing when your child is ready and ‘listening’ to their cues. We followed the 3 day potty training advice in the book and it worked like a charm!! No accidents (pee or poo) after day 2, and after 1 week, he’s already starting to prefer to wake to use the bathroom at night rather than pee in his night time diaper. The book uses very encouraging and supportive language, I would definitely recommend it for first time potty training parents. 🙂

This book is great for first time parents! Navigating how to get started and talking about potty training with your little seemed so daunting, but this book made it seem manageable.Following the guidelines in the book, my son was completely potty trained in 2 days! While I know that some kids just catch on quicker than others, I know that it went much smoother because I had the knowledge on how to approach it and what language to use and not use. This book helped empower me in this initially scary journey.

Dr. Jazmine’s Instagram is such an amazing resource and her potty training book proved to be invaluable. We’ve tried potty training my son on two or three different occassions. Each time we ended up having so many power struggles and would throw in the towel. We knew he was ready, but just couldn’t for the life of us figure out how to make it work. Then I found Dr Jazmine and saw her book. It was a serious game changer. Not only does she outline the readiness of your child, your must haves, and the basic process, but she also gives you so many tools for communication. Without these tips I don’t think I couldv’e done it. I was able to learn how to phrase things and how to give my child the control he needed throughout the process. Now almost a month later I continue to use her communication tools and our boy has been doing great! I recommend this book to everyone considering potty training!

Really good book, easy to read conversational style text I was able to read the entire book in 2 days. My toddler is diaper free a month before her second birthday and the process only took a few days. It works well as long as your child is ready for the potty!
