Make Shaving Great Again!
In my review, I will review the Chieftain Odin Limited Edition razor and give some insight into shaving with a double-edge safety razor, in addition to recommending some supplemental shaving items for a perfect shaving experience.First, let me begin by discussing my shaving background to serve as a basis for comparison for anyone reading my review. Since my teenage years (I am now 30), I have shaved with various brands of disposable multi-blade cartridge razors and canned shaving cream. Sure, they did the job, but every time I shaved I was invariably left with an embarrassingly chopped up, bleeding, burning, irritated neck with little red bumps everywhere. In turn, I avoided shaving like the plague, reaching for my razor only once a week because, come on, who feels like dealing with that? Letâs admit it: shaving was merely a chore. The saddest part, though, is that I thought this was just how shaving was supposed to be; I didnât know I had choices. I didnât know shaving could be… fun.If my story even remotely resembles yours, then fear not, my friend, and read on! Vikings Blade is here!So which razor should you go with? Of the two models offered, I decided to purchase the Chieftain Odin Limited Edition model after much back-and-forth between the shorter handle of the Chieftain and the longer handle of the Vulcan. Iâm sure the Vulcan is a fine razor too, but I love my choice in the Chieftain. The handle, I feel, is just enough; more handle would be unnecessary. Yet the shorter handle of the Chieftain doesnât sacrifice the balanced weight that you want when shaving with a double-edge safety razor, or make it harder to hold.Besides having ideal weight and balance, the Chieftain razor is sturdy and has a great feel to it. The handleâs texture makes the razor comfortable to use and keeps it from slipping from your wet hand. The razor uses a butterfly design, so you twist a knob at the bottom of the razor and the top opens up like butterfly wings for you to then set a double-edged blade inside and close it back up. Itâs that simple, every time. The design works well, and it makes for easy cleanup afterwards too.I also love the rose-gold and black finish of the limited edition Odin razor. Itâs elegant yet manly, and it stands out as both a functional razor and a nice display piece in the bathroom. By just holding and looking at this razor, you can tell itâs well-made and will hold up over time.So does it really work? Absolutely. But a word of caution: with practice comes perfection! You will need to be patient to get used to this razor if you are transitioning from grocery store cartridge razors as I did. Those disposable razors â whose advertisements might as well falsely say, âThe more blades, the merrier!â â are so prone to hacking up your neck because your skin isnât meant to withstand multiple passes of three, four, and five blades simultaneously, over and over again. The Chieftain double-edge safety razor, on the other hand, uses a single blade to give you more control and let YOU decide on the number of passes, which in most cases will probably be only one or two before you achieve the close shave you want. Keep in mind, though, that youâre dealing with a sharp blade here â sharper than disposables, and the razor head does not pivot and follow your contours like the disposables do â so you must take your time and go slow! Rather than using long, swift passes over your face and neck, you need to use short, delicate passes, letting the weight of the razor do the bulk of the work. If you press too hard, then you will most likely nick your skin. Even if you do, though, it still wanes in comparison to the bloody mess that cartridge razors cause. I have a beard, and the first time I used this razor, I had trouble judging where the razor was cutting because, again, itâs just different than the disposables, so I cut off a little more of my beard line than I wanted to. The moral of the story? Just remember to go slow and take your time, and youâll be fine.Letâs talk blades. Double-edge safety blades are disposable because they become dull fairly quickly over time â most people toss them after four or five uses â so youâll eventually have to buy more once the included Vikings Blade blades run out. Speaking of which, probably the only negative thing I could say about the Vikings Blade razors are that their included replacement blades suck pretty bad. The first few times I shaved with my Chieftain using their blades, I wondered why I still got some nicks and irritation. Well, it turns out their replacement blades are beginner blades and arenât as sharp as a double-edge blade could be. It even says right on the bladesâ packaging that they are mild beginner blades. Well, they mean it when they say this. I have since purchased the Astra Platinum pack of 100 blades for $10, and the first time using them I had no nicks or irritation. Therefore, the blade matters just as much as the razor does; you just have to find the proper razor/blade combo for your skin and hair type. I suppose my beard hair is a little on the coarser side, so a sharper blade was what I needed to avoid pulling the hair and consequently causing irritation. My advice is to try the included Vikings Blade blades the first time or two that you use the razor, but I have a feeling youâll quickly be buying different blades as I did.Next, letâs talk about everything else you may want to get for the ultimate shaving experience. Besides a good razor such as the Chieftain or Vulcan, youâre at least going to need a good shaving cream to get a smooth, nick-free, irritation-free shave. Still using canned shaving cream? Then go get it right now, walk over to the nearest trash can, throw it away, and donât look back. Seriously. That stuff is garbage compared to the real deal. I now use Taylor of Old Bond Street sandalwood shaving cream, and it is amazing, from the nice masculine (but not overpowering) scent to the thick lather that it creates. I imagine itâs what an old-time barber shop would smell like.Although optional of course, you may also want to invest in a high-quality badger brush to help make the lather and spread it on your face, and a stainless steel shaving bowl in which to make the lather. They all work well together in combination: you use the wet brush to gather some shaving cream and swirl the brush around in the bowl to create the lather. The shaving bowl will also give you a place from which to retrieve lather with the brush while shaving if you need more later; it will already be made and waiting for you. I actually leave the brush in the bowl while shaving so itâs within easy reach. For both the brush and bowl, I went Vikings Blade brand, and I also got the nice Vikings Blade brush/razor stand to go with it. All of these things are on the pricey side, but youâre paying for quality and longevity here. You may also want to invest in a pre-shave oil and after-shave balm. While these arenât necessarily required, I highly recommend giving them a try. The pre-shave oil goes on before the shaving cream and gives your skin a nice base to keep it conditioned and further minimize nicks and irritation. The after-shave balm obviously goes on after you are finished shaving and all cleaned up, and that helps moisturize and soothe your skin after taking a blade to it. I especially love the after-shave balm because in the rare instance that I do nick myself or have slight irritation, the balm soothes my skin right away and stops the bleeding. Itâs pretty much magic. I went with Lather & Wood Shaving Co. for both of these items. The after-shave balm has an amazing sandalwood scent that lingers after use and has a similar smell to the Taylor shaving cream, so they complement each other nicely. The bottles may look small, but a little goes a long way.Iâll end my review with this:Shaving was always a chore. I dreaded it. I dreaded the pain my skin would endure when I was done. I dreaded the unsightly red bumps on my neck that would last a couple days. I hurried through the shaving process just to get it over with. But now, thanks to the Chieftain razor and the other great shaving items I mentioned, I love shaving and even enjoy the process. Itâs become a manly ritual for me that I actually look forward to every four or five days. Itâs an experience I never thought Iâd have. If you think Iâm being dramatic, so did I when I first read so many shining reviews on double-edge safety razors. But Iâm telling you, get away from disposable cartridge shaving and give the double-edge safety razor a try. The Chieftain wonât let you down. Will it take a little adjusting and time to get used to, to get the most out of your razor? Of course it will. But youâll thank yourself later, and so will your face.

Welcome Home, My Son!
I’ve been an an electric razor user for years. I started out with DE shaving while still in High school. However, I quickly abandoned it because:1.) No one ever showed me the proper process involved. My father always told me that a safety razor was the best shave on the planet. But pop never showed me how. I guess he figured I’d just pick it up through trial and error.2.) Cartridge blades and foam/gels/shaving creams became the latest marketing craze. After trying those many different cartridge blades, and being disappointed in performance (not to mention the high cost), I moved to an electric razor. Electric razors gave me an okay shave, but after a month or so of use, I’ve found that all electric razors just drop in performance and cutting precision. Electric razors leave behind stray hairs or miss hairs. Routinely, I’d notice a hair a tad longer than the others that the razor had missed. After hundreds of dollars in buying electric razors, and never really getting as close a shave as I wanted, a really amazing thing happened.I was cleaning out the bathroom cabinets and I came across an old box. I opened the box and inside was my late father’s original safety razor from 1957. It’s as if he was reaching from the great beyond to tell me to switch to DE shaving! Seriously, I was hit with the realization that, after all these years, I’ve been shaving incorrectly. In looking at dad’s old safety razor, it’s as if he was saying, “Welcome home, my son, to REAL shaving!”I cleaned up pop’s razor and put it aside. I didn’t plan on using it because I wasn’t sure how aggressive a razor it might be. If I was going to get back into DE shaving, I needed something brand new with precision craftsmanship. I wanted a razor that would ensure a nick free and comfortable shave. And I wanted a razor that would last me as long as dad’s original razor lasted him.I came to amazon and started my search. Clearly, the VIKINGS BLADE Double Edge Safety Razor by Julian Vue ruled the day. It has all the features I want in a new razor:-A beautiful Chrome finish-Made from brass and bronze alloy-Butterfly head. This feature, for me was a must have! Dad’s old razor has the same configuration. Dad was a Tool & Die Maker. He worked with steel his entire life. He understood safety and how to work with steel safely. Last thing he wanted was to cut himself from loading a razor blade. The butterfly head solves this. No fumbling around with three pieces of a razor and a blade. Just twist open, pop in the blade, twist close, and get to shaving.-A travel case, mirror, and five blades! The presentation of the razor in the travel case is impeccable. Top notch! And it allows you to easily take the razor and spare blades with you on your travels. The spare blades rest comfortably just underneath the razor. Very convenient!-Good weight and balance. This razor has a wonderful heft and balance. It’s superior to dad’s old razor. The VIKINGS BLADE razor just “feels right” in the hand.-Price. This razor is an unbelievable value! This site: […] rates the top ten safety razors on the market today. The VIKINGS BLADE comes in second place and only behind a first place finisher priced at $260.00 (Razor, brush and stand). Okay, subtract the cost of the brush and stand, and you’re still looking at a razor priced at $150.00 or more! Why? You can get the VIKINGS BLADE for under 35 bucks and it’s rated at number two! However, based on price, performance, materials, and qualoity the VIKINGS BLADE is the NUMBER ONE pick!-Lifetime warranty! Proof that this razor will last as long as dad’s razor, even longer! Now, this is only Part One of my review. Part Two, the actual use of the VIKINGS BLADE razor, will follow in the next few days. However, I’m confident the VIKINGS BLADE will prove to be a winner! The reason for this is that I’m still doing a bit of research into the proper use of a safety razor. This is a precision instrument that requires a proper approach. I liken it to golf. You don’t grab a golf club and start wildly swinging away. No, you learn the proper technique. You learn to understand that the club does all the work in hitting and launching the ball. A smooth and easy swing makes for a nice, straight drive.I’m learning that the same is true with DE shaving. You don’t grab the razor and start shaving. You really need to understand the technique. Here are a few tips I’ve picked up:-Don’t press. Let the blade glide over the skin and do the work (just like the golf club).-Make sure you have a good lather on your face (and learn how to make a good later).-Remember to take short strokes and keep the blade at the proper 30 degree angle.-Change out blades when they start showing signs of dullness. The VIKINGS BLADE’s butterfly head design makes this a snap! So, here’ s my advice, especially if you’re new to DE shaving. BUY the VIKINGS BLADE razor. It really is the one to get. While you wait for delivery, take to the internet and explore the thousands of articles and videos which will give you everything you need to know in the proper use of a safety razor. You, too, will be rewarded with a lifetime of great shaves that will keep you looking great and your wallet looking even greater!PART 2 – This morning I had the wonderful PLEASURE of using the VIKINGS BLADE razor for the very first time! And it really was a pleasure! No nicks, cuts, or razor burns! Amazing! And the feeling afterwards is exactly what all guys are yearning for. A clean-shaven face from a shave that’s close, comfortable, and lasts throughout the day. It’s downright invigorating!I especially like the built-in guards on all four corners of the razor that prevent the corners of a razor blade that would otherwise protrude through and nick you. This razor is nick proof! THAT is worth the price of admission, as they say!The razor has just the right weight and balance and this gives you precise control. It’s the weight of the handle that naturally encourages you from pressing on the skin too hard. When you bring the razor to your face, it’s a simple matter of lightly touching the skin (and lather) and letting the blade glide across your face. Again, short stokes are key. I’d imagine that this is going to be a bit of an adjustment for many who use plastic, disposable razors. These razors with plastic, hollowed out handles are so lightweight, the user tends to press more in order to make contact with the skin. Not so with the VIKINGS BLADE. A light touch is all that is needed. It’s remarkable because this approach allows the blade to do all the work to cleanly cut away the hair. You only need a few ingredients in order to get a clean, close, comfortable shave. A good blade, a good lather, and most importantly, a great razor to pull it all together. The VIKINGS BLADE is that razor.Again follow these steps, especially if you’re new to DE shaving:1.) Buy the VIKINGS BLADE razor NOW.2.) While waiting for delivery, study the proper technique in using a safety razor. Watch youtube videos, read blog posts, etc. Become a student of how it’s done correctly. Seriously, know this inside and out before you give yourself that first shave. I’d imagine that negative reviews regarding safety razors are due to the user not understanding the correct technique. They grab a razor and start hacking away and then complain about the negative experience. As I mentioned earlier, this is like golf. Let the club do all the work. But you really need to know how to use the instrument. So, really do your homework. It’s not a difficult skill to learn and the VIKINGS BLADE makes it much more easy to make the transition to DE shaving. But knowing the proper technique, tips, and tricks will lay the groundwork for a successful first shave which will lead to many more in the days and years ahead.3.) It’s not a difficult skill, but learn to make a good lather.4.) Shower first. If you can’t shower, make sure your beard is good and wet.5.) Use good quality razor blades. They’re plentiful and inexpensive. The five blades that come with the VIKINGS BLADE are excellent!6.) Practice. I now understand how each shave will get better and easier. if you learn the proper technique, you’ll naturally build upon this.As a now former electric razor user, I look forward to no batteries, no charges, no cords, and no clutter. To get a GREAT shave, all you need is a blade, a cake of soap, a brush, and a great razor, the VIKINGS BLADE.

A Decent Razor to Start Down the Rabbit Hole
This is my first DE Safety Razor – I decided after finding a new barber who did the classic hot lather neck shave that I wanted to try something different with my shaving regimen, and I picked up the necessary things to get going. The Vikings Blade Chieftan was purchased for two reasons:1. Reviews – at the time of this writing, it has 15,000+ mostly positive reviews, so it seemed like a safe bet.2. Price – it was very modestly priced, so it seemed like a way to try it without spending much money. The verdict?I’m a convert – I get a very close, yet comfortable shave. MUCH closer than I get with multi-bladed cartridge razors and my can of Barbasol. It does take a bit longer, but I’m ok with that.I got the version in chrome – it looks great and all it takes is to wipe it down for it to maintain its luster.I’ve read a lot of reviews here from folks who say they’ve cut themselves. That has not been my experience, but I have shaved almost daily for decades, and even when I was using cheap disposable razors, I had a preference for the fixed head models so that I had a bit of control over the blade angle. I’m not a fan of pivoting head razors. I got one small nick the first time I used it with one of the blades provided by Vikings Blade, but since I switched to Astra Platinum blades, it’s been pretty smooth sailing.I’ve included a pic – I don’t know if it will be included by Amazon when they review this because I have many products in the pic that are not Vikings Blade, and it’s not specifically of the razor itself. So it’s a good place to start, but I’m already eyeballing some other shaving related products.

Received this razor this week.It is a nice looking and well finished razor, has a good weight. Blades it comes with are too mild for me so after a couple of times I tried ied with an Astro blade this worked a lot better. The razor is very mild so anyone just starting to use single blade razors this is an ideal starter. For more experience it is still a great good looking razor but needs a more aggressive blade.I would suggest to the people at Viking that instead of 5 mild Viking blades that they replace a couple with their more aggressive blades.
