Irises is one of several paintings of irises by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, and one of a series of paintings he made at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, in the last year before his death in 1890.
Van Gogh started painting Irises within a week of entering the asylum, in May 1889, working from nature in the hospital garden.[1] There is a lack of the high tension which is seen in his later works. He called painting “the lightning conductor for my illness” because he felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint.
The painting was probably influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints like many of his works and those by other artists of the time. The similarities occur with strong outlines, unusual angles, including close-up views, and also flattish local color (not modeled according to the fall of light). The painting is full of softness and lightness. Irises is full of life without tragedy.
He considered this painting a study which is probably why there are no known drawings for it,[2] although Theo, Van Gogh’s brother, thought better of it and quickly submitted it to the annual exhibition of the Société des Artistes Indépendants in September 1889, together with Starry Night Over the Rhone. He wrote to Vincent of the exhibition: “[It] strikes the eye from afar. The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life.” The painting is one of his most renowned works.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853 – 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist Master whose innovative artwork powerfully influenced modern Expressionism, Fauvism, and early abstraction. Astoundingly prolific, Van Gogh produced all of his work during a 10-year period, at one point, creating 150 paintings and drawings within one year. Painting outdoors, Van Gogh uniquely captured the nighttime nuances of light and shadow, and was also renowned for his paintings of sunflowers and irises.

GORGEOUS! I used Command picture hanging strips… easy to apply. I really like the canvas option

Vibrant colors
I was a little hesitant to buy something that large online just for the fact of it being a pain to return. I will say that this was packaged beautifully. The colors are vibrant and I have no complaints. I would use this company again if I wanted something of this caliber. Very satisfied.

My mom loves Van Gogh. Like, loves. Iâm not sure where the obsession came from, but Iâm here for it because it makes it easy to buy for her. So far this is the third âpaintingâ Iâve gotten for her and I plan on getting her as many individual ones as I can. It came in perfect condition and fits in perfectly with the other two Iâve gotten her. Next Iâm off to find her that one he painted of his therapist, because why not. ð¤·ð»ââï¸

Irises…I love Van Gogh!
I love this Van Gogh. It is one of my favorites. I had an opportunity to purchase this print as a deal of the day, so I jumped on it. The canvas frame box is not of the best quality. The canvas was not securely fastened to the box. The corners didn’t want to lay correct on the wall, because they were not tightly stapled to the frame. It took me a little work to get it to the print where I could hang it. The sides of the print are pretty shallow, but for the price that is to be expected.The actual canvas is a good print. It looks fantastic hanging in my bedroom. The colors are vivid and life like – to the original. It is the perfect print to wake up to every morning. As odd as it may sound, this print reminds me everyday, to be myself. The one white iris stands tall in a patch of blue irises. It is a great lesson to remember.
